Mention the world famous ice cream sandwich and you’ll have me dreaming of the beach in Margate City, NJ where I spent most of my summers as a child. As soon as I heard the familiar tune emanating from the ice cream truck blocks away I was up and running, money in hand. With so many choices of a cold, summer sweet, any child would be overwhelmed. I could never go wrong, however, with irresistibly smooth vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two soft chocolate wafers.

The ice cream sandwich dates back to 1900 when all you needed was a sweet tooth and a penny to enjoy this tasty take on a sandwich. The trend started from a pushcart in the Bowery neighborhood of New York where ice cream was sandwiched between two milk biscuits. Soon, carts started popping up all around the country. It became such a popular delicacy – countries around the world started to adopt the frozen creation. Each seem to have their own twist. From bread, to sponge cake, to wafers you can’t go wrong as long as there’s ice cream in between!
